Title: Valorization of clove (Syzygium aromaticum) in medicinal and cosmetic applications

Abstract

Clove (Syzygium aromaticum) is a medicinal plant rich in bioactive compounds, notably eugenol, and is widely used in phytocosmetics and natural health care. This study evaluated its potential for relieving dental pain and preventing hair loss. Clove essential oil was extracted by hydrodistillation using a Clevenger apparatus and used to formulate two 100% natural products: a dental soothing oil combining sweet almond oil with clove essential oil, and a hair lotion combining clove-infused vegetable oil, clove and rosemary essential oils, castor oil, and alcohol, applied for 60 days. Two traditional oil macerates based on olive oil and clove, one enriched with rosemary, garlic, and bay leaf, were also prepared and applied weekly to the scalp for at least five months. The dental product was tested on molar caries pain and infant teething pain, while the hair products were assessed on hair loss, density, growth, texture, and shine. The dental oil provided immediate pain relief in most participants, together with a sensation of oral freshness and improved gum condition, while the hair products reduced hair loss and improved density, growth, and shine, with an estimated 50% hair restoration and about 90% of participants reporting noticeable improvement. These findings highlight the therapeutic and cosmetic potential of clove-based natural formulations as safe alternatives to synthetic products for dental pain relief and hair loss prevention.
